Having been guiding for just a few years, I look back and realize how I’ve had to change my approach to fishing with clients. I see many guides who take clients fishing with them. My approach is to take my clients fishing. Think about the difference. I’m not there to catch their fish. I want to teach them how to catch fish themselves. I very rarely fish when I have clients. I see some guides who try to catch the fish while the clients watch him. I personally think that is not what clients are paying for.
I also have had to change the way I look at my equipment. What might work best for me and my buddies/ family may not work at all for clients. Many clients barely know which end of a rod and reel to pick up. Handing them a baitcaster outfit with a jig on it is going to be total frustration for the vast majority of clients. I try to keep it as simple I as possible. That’s why I find trolling so effective with clients. Most clients will have different levels of fishing ability. I rarely spider rig with clients unless they ask to do that. What seems simple to most here may be very confusing to someone who had never done it. It’s hard to teach that in the short amount of time the client has paid for.
Good luck with your guiding. Just take it from me, it will likely change your own fishing.
