    Default KY Lake 12-27-16

Tim (quackrstackr) and I got out on one of the nicest December days I can remember. I've been in the shop 7 days a week and had to get out. We found fish in one of Tim's hotspots that I haven't fished in quite a while. It started out slow then would get crazy for a few minutes then slow again. Lots of the fish we caught could have been caught longlining but we were getting the cobwebs off our spider rig gear. All were caught on jigs within a couple feet of the bottom in 15-20 feet of water.

Tim showed me a new way to shorten a new Southern Crappie Rod 14 foot pole. Let the braid line get close to the Rip Tide prop and a 14 footer instantly becomes a 12 footer. That's why they make replacement tips.

We ended up with 37 keepers. The big fish of the day hit the side of the boat and was gone plus Tim broke off on one. Lots of short fish, tons of yellows. Had one yellow perch and some hog bluegills. We left biting fish but I had failed to keep up with the clicker count.

It was a great day with an old friend who I don't get to fish with as much as I wish I could.

I fished Blood River yesterday and it was slow for the first 45 min and then it started picking up as the morning went on. Just like you we were fishing a couple feet off the bottom and ran 4 rods spider rigging but we caught 2/3's of them jigging with a rod in our hand. We were done by noon and probably caught 65 with only about a dozen being shorts. It was a fun morning

We tried something yesterday that worked good. I keep 2 remotes for my trolling motor in the boat, both programmed. Usually when spiderrigging, when the guy operating the motor gets busy, the boat control goes out the window. After a couple of times drifting off the area we were catching fish while I did whatever, I decided to give Tim the 2nd remote so he could position the boat just like I could. That worked great and kept us where we wanted much better.

Grant, I can see where the hand-held rod would have helped us. We had probably 3-4 bites, some literally yanking the rod tip completely under, for each fish we caught. I know some of them were yellows but many would be fish we could feel as we set the hook but came off.

Fishing boats in KY aren't supposed to be in winter storage.

It really feels funny to be on the lake this time of the year. For the last 20 something years I was always chasing ducks or getting ready for the snow goose season now while my boat sat in the garage.

I wish my boat was ready to fish but after the trip with you I am building a rear deck for the Grandson and moving the batteries under that deck for a new 36 volt trolling motor. I will be back I the water in a couple of weeks. Looks likes you had a real good trip.

I thought you folks might like to see what we were looking for. A lot of the stretched out lines on the right were probably yellows. When we found a full school of those, we moved on. The left side of the screen was our target.
