Thread: Looking at an Ascend 12T Kayak. Any input?

I don't have any info directly for the 12T but just bought the 133 and will give you the good and bad of my Accend. The room you have is very good to be able to carry your gear and the kayak is stable. Rigging the kayak wasn't to hard but the rails that are on the kayak are a different size so you have to buy their accessories or make your own piece that slides into the rail. The biggest thing I have a problem with is that the kayak plastic is "NOT" thick as the other brands kayaks in the upper price range kayaks. This becomes obvious when you try to move around in the kayak and I am afraid as the days get hotter this will become more of a problem as the sun heats up the plastic. I am going to add some support inside to battle this problem. Will all of this said I still like this kayak for the usability of the 133 with everything I have added while setting it up for my use. Hope this helps you in your hunt for a kayak.

I been told to avoid BPS kayaks

I have the 128, and compared to my Old Town of the same length, it has its faults. It is quite a bit heavier and thereby harder to paddle. I've also had problems with inserts pulling out of the hull-- for the anchor trolley and the front lifting strap. We bought a 10-foot Ascend and loved it, but when we went to add another one to the fleet, found that Ascend had changed designs or manufacturers. It was narrower and sat quite a bit lower in the water. We took it back to BPS and got the 128 instead. It's not a bad boat, but there are others out there that are better for comparable prices.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I’m going to hold off on the kayak for now. People are asking new prices for used, scratched up, damaged kayaks. If I’m going to buy new… I think I’ll save up and get a nicer one next season. My buddy said the pedal versions are easier to fish out of anyway. Quite a bit more expensive though.

I considered a kayak a few years back and liked the 12T a lot. I. Reading reviews I found that the 128 didn’t seal as well and got water in the hull a lot more. The 12T had a different hatch and it was a bit higher and didn’t have the water problems. Common sense got hold of me and I didn’t buy one. Some time in a canoe about that time let me know my agility and balance and boats of that nature didn’t agree. Hope you find what’s best for you.

This one as well. Add the pedal drive, and it’s quite expensive. However, at 41” wide, it would be quite stable.
