Default Old Town Discovery 158 Canoe

After selling my Ocean Kayak Big Game II and selling the recent Disco 119, I picked up the Old Town Discovery 158. I know some of you fella's will want some pictures... so I've included one! :-)

I know that was awful, but I couldn't help myself! I haven't had an opportunity to get her on the water yet but hope to tomorrow. I don't have any fancy photos yet, but I did take a photo over by the dealership when it still had the "COVID-19 Safety Covering" on it! When hauling the camper, I plan on using the top ladder rack and using the truck bed extender for shorter trips without the camper. When I got it loaded, I thought they made a mistake and brought me a 59 foot catamaran instead! It looks huge!

My wife was/is gracious enough for me to bring the canoe inside for one night and then the garage. I thought it would be more comfortable (for me) in the air-condition to take some measurements and layout how/where to put the rod holders. Plus, how cool is to be able to bring the boat inside to watch TV! I bet even Bill Dance can't do that!

I ordered a Werner kayak paddle some time in May and noticed where it should be delivered tomorrow sometime. I've only used Carlisle Day Tripper aluminum kayak paddles in the past with previous kayaks because of availability and the lower cost and they have worked well for me with no complaints... except in the past they only made 'em up to 230 cm in length. That would work for most if you prefer the high angle paddling. For a more relaxed paddle stroke, the low angle might be a better choice although you will need a longer paddle and perhaps a longer blade. Since I enjoy pulling crank baits, I chose a 260cm lower angle paddle. Can't wait to try it out.

Here is a sneak peak of the paddle I've been waiting on. It's a Werner Camano Kayak Paddle in Bass Green at 260cm. It's incredibly light compared to what I've used in the past.

I'm not sure how many miles I've paddled in Discovery 158, but it's been more than a few hundred. My best friend and I used to take week-long float fishing trips all around the region and that was our boat of choice. It handles rough water pretty well and has plenty of storage. I hope you have as much fun out of yours as I had in mine.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm gonna try to carve out some time tomorrow after work to see how she handles.

Thanks Matt, It's several steps up from what I have been using even though I had no complaints with the aluminum. This rascal has a carbon shaft and I think fiberglass blades. I do know it's the lightest that I've ever held. I'm glad I got the 260cm for the canoe.

I was able to get the canoe out on the water this afternoon/evening... and I think I'm gonna really like it. No rods/reels on the maiden voyage. I just wanted to see how she handles. I used both the kayak paddle and the traditional canoe paddle and was pleased with both.
