    Default Trolling

I’m new to kayak fishing. A buddy from work gave me a trolling motor. Was just wondering how many of you use one and the pros and cons?

In my opinion, you need to get the yak out and used to it before adding another 50+ lbs with battery and motor. They tend to be a bit cramped as it it..I personally dont think I'd like a battery in the cockpit with me. Just my opinion

Here in TN, adding a trolling motor requires you to register the kayak.

I would not think about putting a trolling motor on my kayak. One of the reasons I like the kayak it is the exercise and the trolling motor and extra battery weight would make it too heavy.

I really didn’t think I’d do it just wondered opinions. But when I saw I’d have to register it that completely ended any thoughts of it. Lol

I have one on mine . I use it to go up river , then fish back. Saves a lot of paddling against the current. I modified mine to mount on the rear and rigged up a foot steering system like you see on the commercial ones .I put the battery behind the seat and have had no problems with it. I only use the motor on the river, anywhere else , its just as easy to paddle without the extra weight of the motor etc.
Like anything else its all in what you want to accomplish.

I’ve used a trolling motor in my yak for 4 years, before that I paddled.I Fish with trolling motor while facing the wind, drift and steer with the paddle while coming back.As far as a battery in the yak,I would assume one would realize the small pleasure crafts like those sold at wallyworld perhaps aren’t built for a battery and motor.
There are multitudes of kayakers that use an electric motor in conjunction with a paddle. If your kayak is capable of handling a motor, and you are also capable of handling one,I would suggest you go for it.Wind is often a deal breaker in a kayak, but with a motor you can move into position, and anchor off,in good spots.
I promise you, when you’ve paddled all day,and you end up on the wrong side of a stiff gale, you will appreciate a motor, especially if your on the down hill side of life.
