    Default Kayak stability

Fixing ro make a trip to Colorado and want to fish some small lakes close to where we are staying. I am use to fishing and hunting out of a pirogue, but have never been in kayak. Just wondering if they are as stable or I hope more stable than a pirogue. Any feed back will be appreciated. I sure don't want to end up in that cold cold water even with a lifejacket.

I would think if your use to a pirogue then you should be alright in a kayak. That being said, there are different types of pirogue and different types of kayak. Some more stable, etc. Try to get a fishing kayak as those are usually wider and more stable vs. touring kayak. Probably want a sit on top vs. sit inside. Use common sense, wear pfd and I think you will be fine.

Fished out a pirogue most of my life. Got to point where I could not get out of it without pulling on the bow rope, or I got a kayak. It is a Native ultimate fx 12 which is about the same weight as my pirogue was. Sooooo at 79 I can still fish the way I like to. Some kayaks are not too stable, some are too heavy. You have to check each out to see if you like it. But I doubt that you will have any probs. Just be sure to wear PFD. Enjoy your ride.
