These are not DIY but are excellent: Neverlost Gear - Neverlost Gear - Best Kayak Paddle Leashes
I only have a tether on my paddle. It's extremely unlikely I will flip when I am fishing because I don't fish in class 2+ whitewater, no. Mostly lakes and mild rivers. When I do fool around on a fun river with rapids, I'm there for the ride and don't fish, and plan for possible flipping (dry bag, nothing valuable on board loose, PFD for the dog). A Nucanoe F12 is like, the aircraft carrier of kayaks, not too nimble in the fast stuff, and heavy. When I want to play, I take a real canoe.

Those are nice and professional looking with the paracord sleeve covering the weed trimmer line. I was able to find orange trimmer line which worked for me and didn’t worry about added cost of paracord sleeve. I have enough I could make probably 100 for about $30 cost. Bought the crimps off amazon and big spool of line which works in my actual trimmer as added bonus.

I have also also made a dog runner from the line using the same crimps. Yorkshire terrier so he isn’t big enough to break it. I made a rack to hang jigs I paint and let dry. Actually pretty cool stuff to have around for projects.
