Default kayak for 10 year old birthday

needing some opinions on sit in or sit on kayaks for a 10 year old. his birthday is at the end of july and we fish pretty often. he has been in a few kayaks and loves to fish out of one but the few he has been in didn't look very comfortable. we fish mainly for crappie and on farm ponds and will catch the occasional 5 or 6 pound bass. i would assume something in the 10 foot length but need some expert advise not some advise from a web site of non fishers. thanks for the replies in advance.

I would suggest the Perception Pescador 10' for a starter at this age. I bought my daughter one a year or so ago and she likes it alot, she is even able to stand and paddle it. One of my sons is actually buying one for his wife, Academy has them on sale for $350 right now. I can actually paddle the 10' Pescador and feel pretty stable and I am 6'4" and 230. This is a basic kayak and you will need to add T-track, rod holders, anchor trolley and other stuff to trick it out for fishing. The H-10 from Ascend is a open style sit in kayak that is about $500 and stable and a good little kayak for the money with a nicer seat than the Pescador. However I prefer the sit on kayaks for most people because they are alot easier to recover after flipping and at some point he will flip....like my kids they love to flip kayaks and climb back in. There are lots of good kayaks out there it depends on how much you want to spend.

Fluid Vaya (22 lbs or 24 lbs in medium or large size), if you can find one. Otherwise go with Jackson Skipper. For a 13-15 year old the pescador is fine.

I have had a Malibu Mini-X for a long time, 9' long, about 45lbs and at 10 he should get years of use out of it. This is very stable, it was hard to flip even in a pool. I have used it myself and I'm 6'4 and a little heavier than flint (I blame the scale). Both of my kids have grown up using it as a first kayak. My son is 11 and my daughter is 14. The only draw back this yak has is it's wide so it is a little more paddling than a narrower yak. They both used it in ponds and the Canoochee river with no issues, but we took it out onto the flats off Tarpon Springs and in the current it kicked my sons butt. Everyone has their own preference. I prefer a sit on top for the kids mainly because it is an easy in and out for bathroom breaks or a swim call and if it does roll we're not stuck in the middle of a lake with a hull full of water. Whatever yak you end of choosing I hope you both enjoy it and the time on the water together.

What a great gift! Depending on how much you want to spend. Both of these two I have listed below I have in our household and would recommend.

If you want to invest in a more expensive one the Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100 is a great choice and comes equipped with things like a side tracking system, the Phase 3 AirPro Seating System, more built in storage areas, etc.

But for a great bargain I would recommend this one:
