You're welcome. This one is actually my second portable sonar setup. My first was a Bottom Line 2D finder in a plastic box powered by a Dewalt 12V drill battery. I still use it when I am in my belly-boat because it is much smaller and I don't need the GPS in the BB.

Yup - just let trail out back where it is out of the way.

I like my HB Helix 5 DI GPS. The GPS feature sold it for me, as I had been using my Garmin Hand-held unit which lacks most of the features the HB has. I considered the SI version, but SI can be hard to read especially on such a small screen. I find great detail running DI on one side of the screen and 2D on the other. The two modes compliment each other and give a very graphic picture of what's on the bottom. The DI works best while moving and the 2D when sitting still.

Sometime I wish I had a bigger screen making it easier to see. In the jon boat I sit it on the seat besides me so it is fairly close to me. However in the canoe it sits on the floor and that puts the screen kind of far away. I have been known to pick it up and get it close to my face while using it in the canoe.

Good luck on your install and let me (us) how you made out.

I think I may have solved the fishfinder mounting problem on my sundolphin. The transducer will be mounted on the side with a suction cup and bracket from my hummingbird, with the guarantee they wouldn't honor. The monitor Is mounted in front of the rod holder port on a piece of wood that has Velcro on it to hold it in place. Now all I have to do is test it, which will be in a couple of days I hope, bad knee is slowing me down. I decided against the magnets because I didn't want to cut a hole in the hull.

    Lou,
I like your new planFish finder on sun dolphin 10ft--ideas needed. Was thinking of mounting ff display Into the rod holder myself by cutting cheap rod holder male part and attaching to the ff display. Hope your knee gets better soonest & you can " shake it down". Once you do get it dialed please send pic? Used to use suction cup'd transducer years ago on small aluminum boat as portable unit, but that had lots of straight flat surface to attach. Interesed if enough flat surface on yak to holdFish finder on sun dolphin 10ft--ideas needed it in place?I haven't been in yak since memorial day, myself.

I like the foam transducer idea and another option to consider would be a 2 litre pop bottle dragged as well.

Damn Lou, when it rains it pours. Sorry for all the things piling up at once for youFish finder on sun dolphin 10ft--ideas needed I would definitely lay low till healed. Don't want ya hurting something new just trying to get out of the yak, also.
I know at my age, 56, getting out ain't easygoing anymore either. Bummer on not even casting, I guess that rules out even shore angling? Wishing you a speedy recovery. I'll still wait for final ff installation picks when ya heal. Haven't had mine out since memorial day still, but got some halibut time in last weekend, however: skunked. Happy 4th to you and yours: maybe excise that elbow by lifting beer bottles all day long on the holiday?Fish finder on sun dolphin 10ft--ideas needed

I can hoist them with the left hand. Being 81 doesn't make it any easier or heal faster, but I'm a stubborn old man and I will keep on till they plant me.
Happy Independence Day to you too.

Tried portable, fishing buddy unit, doesn't work well at all on kayak. Tons of drag from long pole in water from the unit makes paddling just about impossible, fyi. Also yak tracking really effected to the point of useless when using fishing buddy portable. Glad I didn't buy one and just borrowed a friend's unit for the day to test it: absolutely failed in my book.
