Thanks for the info. I've been looking for one for my canoe.
Todd Danger..My unit is a Lowrance Hook4 Chirp. It was a Christmas present. It is my first finder so I will not be able to
compare. It has down scan imaging, sonar, and GPS. Our local reservoirs have not opened for the season and I
have been working on different mounting methods and have not had it on the water yet, however I have fished the
heck out of it in my living room!! It seems to be just the right size for my canoe. I have some glue drying right now
and will post better pictures soon. The unit came with preloaded maps of some lakes rivers and reservoirs and the ability
to chart others. Thanks for your reply. Jim

Todd.. I just wanted to get this in. Read up on side scan. If you at all can afford it get one with it. I wish I had spent the extra money. The down scan sonar and down imaging shows what is directly below your boat within the cone and how deep, which could be anywhere around "down there", or what you have just passed over, which, when in a canoe, it is very dangerous to turn around backwards to fish for, that is why I wanted the transducer as far forward as possible, so hopefully I can fish forward sitting while in the canoe and just drop the lines straight down basically. The side scan tells you they are either on your right, or left, how deep and how far away from the boat, (as I understand it) while still giving you the down scan imaging and sonar features. I would trade up in a heartbeat.
So, maybe these pics will work from my iPhone. The units are attached to the spring clips using epoxy glue and can be moved to any gunwale or thwart position of my choosing.
Ok

Thanks for the info.
If you wanted to see if it would shoot through the hull, you can test it with some kids modeling clay. Make the area for the TD to sit in and be generous with it. Put some water in it and set the TD in it and watch the show. That's how I was told how to find the best place to set one up in the boat before epoxy application was done. Just theory but well used back in the day.

You know, Skeetbum, that was my original plan. Anyone that ever fished non-weedless trolling motors years ago knows how much junk can be collected by anything hanging off the side of the boat or canoe, much less dragged off onto docks, rocks, and stumps. I haven't had the canoe out yet this year because of health problems and the laziness bug however I am going to try both ways, however I prefer inside. Since I don't have side scan it should be every bit as good if not better, being protected inside. Today was going to be the test but my kids are coming over with their kids and that cancels Papa's fishing (Son home from being deployed). Thank you so much for your reply. I will post here as soon as I test it out, sounds like it worked great for you.
Ain't pretty but does the job.
Materials:
plastic zip ties (to secure the transducer wire)
wood screws (to secure the transducer bracket and brass wreath hanger to wood strip)
length of wood 2" wide and long enough so the transducer is alway in the water
brass wreath hanger for the front door (usually aluminum or brass)
Clamp
Easy on easy off.
