Default What Boat Are You Running for Slabs?

The title says it all. I am thinking about purchasing a 16ft jon boat from my cousin with a 25hp motor on it that only has about 10 hours on it for about 2,500 dollars. What do you guys think? I will use it for lake fishing to take my 60 lb dog and usually a friend. I have a kayak so I will be using that for smaller lakes and ponds, but I wanted something that I could duck hunt, fish, and cruise across the lake with and it seems like a good overall fit. It got me thinking, what do you guys use? Post your pictures if possible, but not required, also, give some feedback about what you love about it, and also what you might dislike about it. I look forward to seeing your posts!

16 ft boats vary greatly. What width, sidewall and transom height is it? A smaller 16ft boat could easily get into trouble in if the wind and waves build up on big rivers and open lakes.

I have a Lund 1625 Fury XL. It is a "big" 16 ft boat with a deep v hull. I've never felt unsafe in it, but have taken some beatings when waves build up.

On the other hand, I've fished in 16ft flat hull jons with 15" transoms. I felt unsafe in them with small following waves, and was nearly swamped in stuff that would be nothing for my Lund.

I have a 1548 Duracraft flat bottom Jon 15" transom that i customized and still adding too. Ive been out on the lake in maybe 15 mph wind and yes its a little bumpy on the move but i still feel safe on it. Im around 250lb and i move around on it just fine. Its 48" in floor and 62-63 across the beam. Name: 1203171002.jpg

I am not sure on the specifics. I want to say it is 48 inches wide at the bottom and about 18-10 inches deep. It is a flat bottom so I am sure it isn't going to be as stable as a dedicated v-bottom. I just need something that will work for a few years or so.

That's a nice looking boat there Mike. I am digging the upgrades. Is yours a welded boat or a riveted one? I think the one offered to me is riveted. The motor he has on it is a super nice. It has electric start and I believe it is a 3500 dollar motor in itself so that alone makes it a good deal.

All I can say is go get it and get busy upgrading. 16 ft is going to be a48 bottom most likley and with that motor be a great boat. It would already be at my house.

Mine is welded (no rivets). I bought everything separately. Boat-motor-tm then decked it anded livewell and 24v tm setup. Built homeade adjutale motor mount and carpeted it up. I waited and watched for deals and picked up my 86model40 for 900. Picked up the boat for 800. And tm for 150. And done all the rest myeself.

Thanks for the advice Cray! I think I am going to jump on it so that I have a nice little project to keep me busy in the winter. The boat doesn't need any work done, I would just like to make a platform on the front and install a nice trolling motor on it.

That'll be a nice boat with a new motor at that price. Flat bottom boats have very high initial stability, but low secondary stability. Take some time walking around in it in shallow safe water to sort to see what it can take, before dipping a gunnel on accident later. Just take it easy at first, until you know what kind of water the boat can handle. I say this, because in my invincible youth, I capsized a couple small skiffs.
