Many years ago when I was stationed at Homestead AFB, some buddies and me embarked on a three day camping/canoeing trip near Lake Okeechobee.

We learned the gators we encountered during the day were rather timid and would avoid us as we canoed the canals and creek.

I was much younger then and my decision maker wasn't very developed. One of those evenings after knocking down several beers two of us launched our canoe in hopes of catching a good Peacock or Largemouth. We learned those docile gators we encountered during the day became very curious after the sun went down. After a couple bumped the canoe, we had sense enough to return to camp.

I have lived and fished in Florida all my life and I agree with most everything posted here, the main thing to remember is to stay calm and leave them alone. If one gets too close crack him on the head with your paddle if that doesn't make him leave then shoot him. We have plenty of them

What are gun laws there? I never bothered getting a concealed carry permit because I prefer a belt holster. Someday I may be sorry for being to lazy to get the permit.

The laws vary depending on where your are fishing. But if you do have a permit, no one needs to know you have one on you unless you need it, then who cares.

I live in the People's Republik of Illinois - the last state to pass a CC law, BTW. But - even here, some portion of the 'regs' say you are allowed to be in possession of a handgun 'while pursuing hunting or fishing' - or in transit - so long as it doesn't conflict with any other reg that prevents it. So - to use an example - you can't be Bow Hunting and have a handgun with you. (concealed or otherwise). However - because the regs are confusing - and because I have a CC permit - if I'm 'transiting' to hunt' - meaning walking in, or riding an ATV - I have my handgun (concealed) on me. OF course, if I'm on my ATV, I also have to have the bow in a case or otherwise 'disabled' from being used. A couple zip ties around the strings seems to meet that requirement. Then - when I get to my stand - I just put my unload it and put it in my pack which is hanging on the tree. If I am 'still-hunting' my way back out, when I leave and I have an arrow knocked - then I just leave the pistol in 'transport' mode - meaning unloaded and cased (my pack meets that reg)

It's a shame is so confusing - but we have had issues with feral dogs and feral druggies growing their pot in the corn fields and I don't wanna come up on either - carrying nothing but a 'stick and string' - I'll take my chances in court or just pay a fine if I'm doing something wrong. Plus - a few times - we've 'spined' a deer = which mean it's not gonna die quickly or humanely - a quick bullet ends all that and is the morally right thing to do, but 'the laws' probably don't agree.

(sorry - didn't mean to hijack the thread, but guaranteed - if I was around something like gators or water moccasins <not likely> - I'd have something with me. Legal or not )

In Florida the law says we can open carry while in route to or from hunting or fishing but like your great state after that it gets a little fuzzy. I do have a CCW permit and I carry 100% of the time. I would rather get in trouble for having it on me than die because I don't. I truly believe the right to defend your life is a God given right and not a government given right. I will stop my sermon now.

I also want to say I am very proud to live in a state where our government believes you have the right to stand your ground and defend yourself and do not have a duty to retreat.

Anyone here who has hunted alligators? Shooting one in the head after it has a hold on you seems unlikely.

The idea here is to stop them from getting a hold on me to start with. I would not wait to put on my seatbelt until my car is spinning out of control.
