Fished on a FL river one time on a kayak... the gators would swim under the kayak and the ribs on their back would scrape the bottom of the kayak... just checking me out.

I still get chill bumps every time I think about it.

    Sold the kayak...

Saw a wake coming at me and felt something pretty big and long bump under my kayak last weekend. I keep telling myself carp, but I was in an area known to have gators.

One thing I never thought about til I read it on here and that is never use a stringer to keep fish over the side. If a gator decided to take them he could easily dump you in the lake as well. Scary thought.

A refuge lake 5 min. from my house is full of them. I fish it a lot in a pirogue and have seen them up to 12+ feet which is a foot bigger than what I'm fishing out of. Gotta keep your head on a swivel and fish on.

I would get a gun and wear it if legal. It is not just enough to have it you need to figured out how you are going to use it. Keeping calm is going to save your life if you need a gun.

I would also worry more about bank fishing than in a Kayak. At least you have a piece of plastic between you and the teeth. Launching may actually be the most dangerous time.

There are urban woods near my house and I carry a gun to protect my dog from the feral dogs. I think the same principle may apply here. There are things alligators are more interested in than you. Never put anything in your Kayak that looks like a snack that includes but is not limited to pets, childern and fish. Catch and release would be the best way to go and don't put you hand in the water to retrieve a fish, release it as soon as possible.
