Can you reach into the rear hatch while in the boat, I know I can't.... Do you mean the rear tankwell?

May be a tank well yea. Mine only has a small rubber gasket type thing right behind the back seat; and it's to hold fish. Dosnt need to keep them alive now that I think about it, just cold after a full day and I have no room up top for a cooler. Thanks again!

Softsided cooler, 12-24 can size, works well. Add one or two frozen water bottles. You can set it in the tankwell and on some kayaks you can leave it up by your feet. A plus is that it floats (unless overstuffed).

what about a fish basket the wire floating kind? a lot of people i see use them on the shore cause turtles can not get threw it easily. for sure once you get them out of the water put them on ice no matter what. but to tow a floating fish basket behind you in a kayak or canoe would not be that hard? if you don't know what a fish basket is just ask i find a picture of one for you asap...

I made my own out of pvc pipe and a laundry bag works well I have hade 40 crappie in it with no problem. Making the frame in an diamond shape with a small stainless steel tube in the bottom for weight and to hold bag straight works well.
