    Default Kirwin 5-6 and 5-7

Just a heads up for anyone planning on fishing Kirwin this weekend, the refuge is planning to burn several units around the reservoir. There is the potential to put a fair amount of smoke on the reservoir at times. Most smoke impact will likely be on Sunday as the units beginning near the south side of the dam working towards the south shore boat ramp, around the scout camp and beyond are burned. Plans may change depending on the winds. I will try to update as needed.

We didn't end up burning anything today due to winds. Planning to burn off a couple units on Monday and that will be it for the season. Should not be much of smoke impact to fisherman, if any. Mike

Isn't this really late to be burning? I would think your harming bird nests or chicks?

The boat dock on the south side will hopefully be going in soon. The decision was made to hold off on that one while the water levels were still coming up so that we didn't have to keep moving it. There is a dock on the north side that is in place. As far as burning goes, no it's not really too late. Upland birds are just getting going on nesting here. Yes, there is a small chance we could damage a nest but you have to keep in mind a couple things. One, we are burning poor to marginal nesting habitat. These are areas dominated by smooth brome and now is a great time to burn it to set it back. These areas will be much better wildlife habitat because of it. Second, upland game birds will re nest if their first was unsuccessful.
