Thanks for the welcome Shipahoy41. I dont plan on spending a fortune to start out with at all, but as far as the bobbin goes, it's almost one of those things that gets aggrovating after you try to tie a few and you have to keep worrying about your thread fraying and breaking....which is why i'm gonna get a little better one. I've always liked tinkering with stuff and making stuff, so I can really see myself enjoying this, especially after I really get the hang of it and hopefully it becomes "second nature".

Do you guys know where I can order some 1/16th oz. minnow head jigs with a #2 hooks, that would be good for FnF jigs, in bulk?

I just joined the site, and since I have been considering tying some jigs, I came here first.

I just want to say thank you for the info. I at least have an idea on where to start when and if I decide to.

I love crappie fishing, but don't do it much. I am going to get more into it this winter and next year, so I will be using more of the tied jigs in the coming months.

I pour them ALOT this time or year......I sell a few heads and EVEN MORE of the flies.Shoot me a email or a PM and we will go from there. I will help you anyway I can....Good Tyin'.....The GrouseFly

Oh yea, On The Bobbins, I have tried about every kind that is out there and settle on ceramic. After going to those I cut my bobbin count in have. I have a handful of the regular ones, both high $$$ and cheap, and they all did the same thing. they eventually wear a gap in the head and it will cut the thread as fast as it hits it. AND MAN YOU TALK ABOUT GETTING MADD.........

Thanks Skip. I just shot him a PM. He charges $9.00 per 100 unpainted jigs. Add $5.00 if he paints them. Those are not bad prices people.

    Default getting started

skip, shipahoy, and all of the other seasoned tyers, thanx for the info. Like so many of us, I can't sit around the house watchin what mama thinks is "good" TV. I learned to fish when I was 4, became moderately addicted to bird hunting and shotgun sports in my late teens, and started deer hunting in my 30s. I'm afraid to know how much I've spent pursuing my passions. I have a target rifle on hold and will be getting back into reloading for long range stuff. But I can't get the tying bug out of my hair. One day soon I'll be bumping all of you guys with rookie questions. I've always felt that knowledge of any sport is to be shared among each other, nice to see I'm not alone.....Tim
We are all just passing by,
And occupy our chair for but a short while
Those we get to sit with are Gods gift

    Hey Skeetbum,

Once you tie your first one, you will be hooked and so will the crappies. If we can help, let us know.

Just joined the site today and wish I found it yesterday I decided this week that I was gonna give tying my own jigs a shot so I found a site online and order some materials to get me started then I headed to cabelas today and got a bobbin (wish I seen site first cause I got the $2.99 one lol) and the cabelas super II vise (looks like shipahoy had that on his starters list so I did ok there) But I ordered the kevlar thread and did'nt see anyone mention that kind here so think I messed up on that. Oh well at least I can get the idea and now that I found this site and all its great advice and info I'm sure it will make my new hobbie alot more enjoyable thanks all in advance and if I ask way to many question just smack me
