I have been reading through this thread and wonder if a kit is a good way to go for starters. If so, what starter kit would you recommend?

    Thanks.

Wow sorry to be so slow with a reply. For me I like the C-Clamp, but some like to be able to move it around and tie in places I can't clamp because of the kind of furniture? I can move mine too as long as there is a black to clamp and for me it's more sturdy. All this is really personal taste and likes and dislikes.

There are some that like the kits, but really it comes down to pocket book and how sure you are that it's something you want to do for a long time, hobby like? Kits don't have a good vise really, I mean kits that cost $45-$70 with vise tools and some materials, but a good Rotary Vise will be over $150. A good fixed vise is still going to be more than one of these kits, but you can also just buy better later? It's up to each person.

I used a beginner vise for years. Last year I bought a J. Stockard rotating spring action vise for $39.95. Big step up, still inexpensive. Might be one to consider.

I would like to start tying my own jigs and rather buying a cheap kit off Amazon I wanted to ask you guys what I need to get to get going but also what are some things that has worked well for you, things that you wish you would have gotten or knew starting off. I’m extremely coachable and just want to learn.

I used cheap cam vises for (several!)decades, a decent quality one holds a hook fine, for a good while. If your using jig sized hooks and not smaller fly stuff, it’s likely even better. Not too much of a variety of materials for jigs is needed so I think I’d avoid kits. Get an ok vise, then buy chenille, marabou, hair and flash, etc, from a reputable seller.

    Other thoughts,

    Buy a good ceramic bobbin.

Not including Texoma in this-have lots of experience there. Also not asking about your honey holes just general lake recommendations.

If you have the time and inclination, fly, or jig tying is fun. I used to tie flies. I did some wooly buggers, took them to Alaska, and caught salmon on them - that was a good feeling.

Flys/jigs are so inexpensive, other than the joy, and possible therapy of doing your own, it doesn't make much sense. But lots of things I do doesn't make much sense.

The hobby of tying no matter if it’s flies or jig is a great hobby, but it’s not a cheap hobby! I use a higher cost vise, but I like being able to rotate it and see all around easy. I also like to be able to spin my vise when laying down thread. You can get away with a lower cost vise, but it comes down to if you like real quality or just something to hold you hook. Personally I have to admit I like and enjoy the higher quality vise and tools. For sure don’t skimp on scissors!

I have been thinking about tying for awhile now as well as pouring lead and plastics. I will start with tying, the rest will come a little later. I think I have found a decent vise, and decent tools to start, but having trouble with what materials to start with. I don't even know good sites to use, I have no fly shops around me. I would greatly appreciate any advice for any of the start up. I've read through and there's some good advice here but surely some is a little outdated. Is it possible to get started from nothing for $200? If you had to start over with $200 what would you get? I will definitely add more to this, I just have a lot of free time now and want to get started and know very little. I am looking to tie 1/32- 1/16 oz jigs for crappie, hair and feather. Thanks in advance
