Here's an interesting article discussing factors that affect the ability to mimic baitfish when tying flies.
It also applies well to jigs and matches my own thoughts about what I want my jigs to look like when trying to match the existing baitfish size, shape, and color.
More effort by me is needed to accomplish this with a jig that looks like what crappie are currently eating.
