    Default mega jig material ideas

I am going to be making some really large jigs, 3/8 to 1/2 ounce and 1.75 inches or so long. I know what to use from seeing the store bought ones but I want to know the easiest, decently durable and yes, as inexpensive as possible materials to use. The one pictured is all marabou with 2 strands of crystal flash, I think the black is marabou anyway, same feel and same flow. I have seen some with rabbit strips, (zonker?) some with hackle and chenille and many other materials. Action isn't as important in the material being faster water river fishing. Any and all thought are appreciated. I know the head is beat up on this one also but I will pick up anything and refurbish it as long as it isn't rusted or bent way out of shape. The black might be fake fur or rabbit but feels wrapped so if it is then it is a thin strip of either.

Looking at the jig I think you’ve got a good idea of the materials. Rabbit comes cut lengthways and crossways, of crosscut strips. The fur lays different on each one, like the nap on a piece of carpet. If you want durability on the head paint, you can try coating with a two part epoxy. That’s a learning curve in itself. Some are 5 minute and some take a very long time to set and not be tacky. The ones I tried this with were bounced off of concrete posts several times before the paint got hurt and then it wasn’t as bad as usual. I’m looking forward to seeing your finished jigs. I can see that one as being a good producer.

Rabbit makes a good looking lake jig if that is what you want. Use the Crosscut on the body and the Zonker for the tail.

Skip, are those Mustad ultra points, 32833s? Could you give me a size idea on those?

I am thinking rabbit may be a great way to go. The jigs I'll be making are for river fishing in faster current so the better the material stays out when pulled in the current the better.

Actually these are the old original Sickle hooks from Matuzo. I would bet these are #4, but I am not positive if they were 1/4 or 1/8 heads. It's just too long ago for me to remember for sure. I used a lot of #4 Sickle on 1/4 Oz heads for a long time. I have a few with larger Sickles, but have not actually tied any of them yet. most of my heads still have the old Sickles hooks!
