    S K U N K. City

First time in a long while. Not even a nibbler. I swapped jigs, swapped rods around, altered speeds from too slow to too fast, with wind, against wind, at angle to wind. STILL NOTHING. Could not buy a bite.

    Had it coming I reckon.
Maybe they will bite this one……

The folks I fished with many years ago would say that is why they call it fishing. Otherwise it would be called catching

Well it was nice not having to clean a mess of fish. LOL
I do appreciate the condolences though. Thanks.

I selected that lake because it was going to be windy, and the larger lakes develop larger waves, and the smaller lakes smaller waves. It is said to contain way way too many crappie and that has lead to them all being stunted. Which they certainly seem to be. I have seen the biologists netting them with small trawlers in an attempt to reduce the population. There is also a huge number of shad and that enters into the equation as well. Usually I manage more fish and unsure of why I was unable to find any. Fish can be fickle, and it is a transitional time of year. I think I will let the lake water soak a while before going back to see how things have gone.

Funny how ALL the fish in a lake think EXACTLY alike.

Folks say that the fish are not leader shy but I beg to differ. I have tried heavier mono leaders and seen my catches diminish, and have tied straight to braid and seen bite rates shrink. Adding a light weight mono leader to my braid main line is definitely getting me more hits but at a cost. Once it wraps up on a jig and gets all curled up it becomes weak. I had several fish snap free when they really should have come aboard. Had the line snap while unhooking fish as well. Had the line snap when the fish struck the stern instead of coming alongside for the big heave. Still I imagine it is better to catch more but lose more, than catch fewer but lose fewer. Something like that.

Maybe it involves the way the jig moves but I am trolling and as near as I can tell they are swimming straight and level. So it isn’t movement like jigging action, it must be something else affecting the lures. Not depth either.

I fasten my line to a curly wire connector and that is great for when I swap out jigs. Before next trip I will rig up all new leaders and continue using these as switching jigs seems to be a good thing. Not 100% sure though. Sticking with a great game plan might be better. Three trips seems to be the max for my leaders. Those fish sure can wrap up a jig in a hurry. Especially an under spin. LOL

I gave away a huge supply of surplus jigs, and not sure how well they will be used, but at least they are well away from me now. I can focus on making all new jigs now. I very rarely lose any while fishing, but some get mauled pretty good. I like using a drop of glue to secure the bait to the head. Stinks so I leave them hanging to air out for a few days. Not sure it helps but they do stink less. I am able to lift the fish into the boat, drop him on the deck and offer slack line, then usually they flop and flip about and out pops the jig, which I then quick cast right back out. Nice not having to fiddle around positioning the plastic after each catch.

The two trips prior to this one I noticed that the fish seemed to like one jig better than another. Same plastic baits, same size head, everything equal and even presented the same way. I imagine this may be as a result of something very small and difficult to detect. Like one swivel spins differently. Maybe one swims differently. I know there are weird occurrences, such as the rods on the starboard side getting all the bites, but that comes down to chance and such. This preferred jig thing seems real enough. I looked and compared and can see no noticeable difference.

I do struggle with the insertion process. I have stuck hundreds of baits at this point, and one would think I have developed the skill set necessary, but nope. I still get crooked baits. I hunted on the interwebs for suggestions on how to stab on a plastic grub and keep it straight. Everyone kind of says do this and it works, and it doesn’t. When trolling the alignment is critical to how it swims. It is something I just have to learn I guess.

It is certainly hard to get those bodies straight on the hooks some of the time.
