And how they are biting. If they seem to be biting short or just the tail. I want it shortened up to get them closer to the hook

I always go smaller in the winter. Larger when they are deeper in the summer and the shad are getting bigger.

For me it depends on the materials I am using and that would be like 2" to 2 3/4" long. Even using the same hook size one of my jigs that is tied with say kiptail will be shorter than one I tie using marabou. I should also say changing size of the lead head and hook size (like going from a 1/32 #6 hook to 1/8 #2) will also change the size.

That's about as well as I can tell you what length my jigs are.

    Good luck,

My approach is to tie the same jig on several sizes til I find which one works best for me where I fish. A 1/16 is about an inch and a half and if it tie it bigger or smaller I just change the proportions to make it look balanced like the 1/16 is.

I tie from 1/4 to 1/64 jig heads. All of them have a time and place when I am out on the water.
