    Default Making Jig Painting Complex?

A couple of years ago I decided I was going to start painting my own jigs. So I went out and got some powder paint. After melting quite a few jigs on my open flame heating source, I gave the paint away. The thought crossed my mind to get a fluid bed system, but that idea quickly left my cerebral cortex when I thought of really how few jigs I was really going to be painting. Then I started using finger nail polish. After discovering that not all polishes are made the same, I started thinking about how to overcome the main failure of polish, incomplete opacity without multiple coats in certain colors. I have an idea. Harbor Freight sells powder paint and heat guns. Gun cost about $35 and 16 oz of paint costs about $7. If a person got white paint and applied it to every jig, then overlaid the particular finger nail polish color you want. Would it work? Anyone ever try that technique? Yes, I know it is probably an overkill, but I have really had trouble getting the results I desire with polish alone.

It works but I have found it just easier to put on the white then while still hot add a lil more heat and dip my color. After a very short time you will not melt jigs. I do use propane to heat my jigs. Be fast and and count at every jig heating, 2 to 5 seconds on my big jigs. I personally never was satisfied with nail polish.

So you are putting a base coat of white powder paint on your jigs, reheating a bit and adding the color you want of powder paint, correct?
Also, are you using a fluid bed?

yes white, then lil more heat color and clean and bake. And yes I do use a fluid bed. I have had it many years and it does help me. Some colors like black dont need a base coat but it is amazing what changes happen to colors. Purples and greens change quite a bit. Some for the better some not so much. It is fun to play with on a cold winters day.

Harbor Freight sells their Warrior heat gun for $14.99, with a 20% off coupon its about $11.99. Been using one for awhile now, the low setting on the gun works fine for jigheads.

Just bought the components to build a couple fluid beds. Not expensive at all and simple.

I use a small paint brush and tap a second color of powder coat on my jigheads if wanting a 2 tone effect. Very easy to do.

Here is disco orange powder paint (which has glitter) added to the top of a solid orange I mixed using HF powder paint. Name: 20191229_135121.jpg

I powder paint white on the jigs, than bake in oven and then apply fingernail polish. Two tone or three tone polish if you wish, add eyes and then coat with DV2. It makes for a very sturdy paint job! DV2 really gives a jig head a nice look!
