I have been using this rig for over a month with good success.
I have had a lot of gills, especially the smaller ones, swallowing the hook.
I do recommend using a barb less hook. I also use barb less hooks when fishing with small children.
It saves a trip the the ER.

My fishing buddies are very hard of the flies. They use pliers to remove swallowed hooks and tare up the body material.I can't get them to use a hook disgorger.
I viewed a post on bead head flies by Z520TOM and started using beads on the flies. Now the guys have something to grab on to when removing swallowed hooks.Name: Drop Shot Flies.JPG

Here is another very durable material I use a lot for tails. I also had some nice flash to it when it moves. It's called Flat Diamond Braid. In most fly tying supply catalogs.

Any one of these patterns will work well on the drop shot rigs.

Are those caddis hooks? Great looking lures.

Mustad C49S #10 and a 5/32 bead. Brass or tungsten. These also have some lead wire wrapped on the hook shaft. 1/48oz 1/64oz.

Thanks. I tie mostly size 6&8 for steelhead and salmon. Will need to pick up some smaller hooks. I appreciate your feedback.

The tails are flat diamond braid unraveled and the body is 2mm crystal antron chennile.

Hook size is #8 and bead size is 4MM.
I got the beads at Hobby Lobby some time ago when tying up walleye spinners.
I suggest using plastic beads over glass as they will not break if pinched with a tool.
The plastic beads can drilled out and will slide on the hook without having to bend the hook.
