Default My first attempt - Red Eyed Toughie

This is my first attempt at tying anything other than a squirrel tailed bream catching jig tied with sewing thread and I probably only tied a dozen of those. Got me a vise, some stuff including ceramic eyed bobbins, "real" thread (Danville 210), some maribou, some chenille and other accoutrements. My first jig didn't look too good because I trimmed the maribou. The next 3 looked alright I think. Fish catchable at least. It would have helped if I could remember to put flash in all of them as I make them.

So far I've learned that wrestling maribou to get it distributed around the jig and getting flash on both sides of the hook, takes some practice, or maybe a talent that I do not currently possess. Doing decent on the maribou distribution, but the flash wants to wind up all on one side.

I wanted a "Monkey Milk" look but the chenille is darker than it looked in the pictures on the website. Give me some honest feedback.

First, only take chenille back to just in front of hook point. Opens up the area for hook to set in fishes mouth. On flash I have same problem, I take a piece or two make a couple of wraps then add a couple more where I want them then wrap. Seems to help me. I know these guys who are really good don’t have a problem but big thing is just practice and some more practice. But those will catch fish for sure. Lots of the astetic stuff means a lot more to us than the fish.

Well my Monkey Milk is different and Florescent as well. Jigs looks pretty good especially for a new tier, but the bottom one try to make sure to keep the chenille body tight against the head. Many tie marabou like you do with stem in, but I tie 90% of mine with no stem in the tail. I tear the marbles off the stem and make a stack until I have enough, then I pinch it about where I plan on cutting off the bad ends to length I want, then tie it in.

I am pretty sure all my fist jigs looked like, well pretty bad, lol!

How do you make the body portion fatter? Double wrap the chenille?

Looks good brother! There's a few ways to make the body fatter. Bigger chenille or tie you tag the length of the body is my preferred way. Give me a call if you have any questions. I Also got some supplies I will give you

The fish will answer that Fur. If they short strike the. The tail needs to be shorter, tie it that way next time, don’t trim this one.

The way I do flash is one piece that's long enough for both sides. Double it to form a loop and go over the jig head and wrap a couple wraps. Pull the flash tight where you want it to be, up, down, or in the middle of the jig. Wrap as usual.

Looks like a gray ghost pattern. The fish should be all over them
