    Default Vise Height

Just wondering how everyone’s sets their vise. I have mind sitting on a folding table. After tying for awhile my shoulders and neck start to ache. I think it’s from holding my arms up. I thinking I might need to drop it down some to the point where my arms are more at 9 o’clock position instead of at the 10-11 o’clock. I tried lifting my chair higher but it seems like i’m Still looking up. Basically my eyes are looking at the top of the jig. Sometimes I think it’s the vise i’m Tying on which is a peak. I have kinda big paws and I struggle when tying in tail material on a small hook because of the way the jaws drop down. I don’t know but just seeing if you guys have problems or a suggestion . Thanks in advance.

My vise sits at low chest level, just several inches above my navel. I had the same issue when it was higher so mine is attached to one of the 6' folding tables, but a friend helped me brace underneath the table and then added two 2x6 made into an L shape and attached it to the outside on the table to make a shelf lower than the top. Now my "C" Clamp on the vise lets it sit at a good level for me. Now I am by no means tall at 5' 8".I will try to get a picture of this.Skip

I’m having to setup and use on kitchen table. Not currently able to tie enough to get sore....lol. About 2 hrs is all I get if I’m lucky. I do have plans and a dedicated desk set aside for this one day. Currently the jig hits around chest level when on kitchen table. I think it’s a good height for me.

Mine sits on a fold out desk similar to a secretary desk and is a bit low for me. I don’t tie very much per sitting, I’m an orthopedic mess anyway. Interested in seeing what folks find comfortable. My desk being fold up and vise on a freestanding base, I may have some options that others don’t.

I am super interested in this and will be following.
Skeet does that freestanding base really work?
    Is it weighted?

Ok my fly tying vice is in my den. It's on an old computer desk. I'm right handed so the vice is on the left side of the pull out keyboard drawer. I also have an old computer chair and a 50" TV if i need a break. lol

Redge, it’s what I started with and never had one clamped on to anything. I think it works OK. I can be heavy handed and broke a lot of thread when I started. It has stayed put more often than not. I like being able to push it acknowledges inside the desk some and close it up when company comes by. It’s still a mess when I open it back up so I’m good! LOL yes, it’s weighted and felt covered so it doesn’t scar the work surface.
