Raccoon tails?

I recently acquired 2 raccoon tails, does anyone ever use them to tie jigs? Are they much different than deer or squirrel tails?

I use a stiff dog brush to brush out the under fur. Makes good dubbing. Tie the fur like squirrel tail.

I tied some for a guy a long time back, maybe 7 - 10 years ago and still have some tail hair, but have not really tied it much since that. I use one of the little mustaches combs to get under fur out, works just dandy! Personally I would use Fox, Kip Tail, Squirrel tail and a few others before I would the Raccoon tail. Maybe that is just me, but I like color and have never seen any dyed Raccoon hair/fur.

Like everyone else comb out the underfur! It's not hard to tie with, but I'm with Skip I prefer other materials, but if it's all I had I would. Not a lot of dyed so you'd have to do it yourself.

Drop them in a warm bath of water and alum . Those little spice containers at the grocery store will work . Stir 2 times a day . For 3 or 4 days . (water does not have to stay warm ) Then put them in some kind of pot you will never use for anything else . Get the temp of water 140 degrees to 160 degrees at most add some type of acid dye or you can use Rite but it tends to fade . Stir off and on for about 2 hrs . Rinse tails in in something other than house use container until water is clear. Hang them and let them dry . Caution if you want to live don't put them in the wife's dryer, hair can reappear even if the lint trap is cleaned and a hot dead critter smell could remain for hours . Gals don't have an appreciation for that .
