    Default Using All The Hackle

Just thought I would share something that maybe some don't do. When I am finished cutting the V's I save the remainder of the Hackle. That is because you can make a nice tip-less tail jig using a few of the what some may call trash. Just another way to use what some throw in the trash can.

    See Pics below:

Once I have cut almost all the straight barbules into little V's this is what is left of 3 SW neck hackle feathers.

I took these 3 remnants and made this tail to tie in.

I usually do that to if the “waste” is enough. I usually use a feather all up.

Good job Skip I'm with Dave as I have done this with feathers and also use buck tail till it's gone. Buck tail is more iffy but I really don't think the walleye care.

Looks really really good. I Actually like the looks of that better than a tip. Eye wise and fish wise.
It’d be like fishing bou strands but tougher.
Shame they wldnt be long enough for a #2, or 1 hook.
Even a # 4 would be stretching it is my guess?
    What size is that hook?

That is a #4 Sickle. Some of the longer hackle would probably work on a #2, the shorter parts wouldn't be wide enough and wide is really what we are talking about with the V type tying. when I use to buy a pound of hackle there would be some of it very nice and long and some would be just the 5" size, but even that is okay on the #4 and for sure any smaller size like a #6.

Now if we are talking just regular bend hooks, they have a longer shank so not sure about where the cut off would be on them, but and confident a #4 will work fine.

I should add these will work great on the Roadrunners.
