Default And one more question, painted heads

    Ok
I noticed all you guys with excellent jigs are painting the heads.
    Is it really necessary?
    More bites?
Or just necessary to sell them?
Or extra contrast worth the expense?

    Thanks one more time

I don't think it's necessary but I do enjoy it and love the finished look. I don't powder paint, I use fingernail polish. Taking the time and crafting the jigs is really a labor of love and a hobby I enjoy.

I believe sometimes it adds to the catch appeal of a bait.

May not really make any difference but I’m one who believes in having contrasting colors makes a difference at times. And like SuperDave I just enjoy finishing them.

1/16 and 1/32 #2 red sickle hook powder painted Chartreuse is about all I use. I buy them from a local shop, clean the flash off of them and powder paint them.

Can you catch fish on an unpainted head.....yes! Does painting improve the performance of the bait, certainly. Playing with color schemes is essential to finding what colors work best together. Painting eyes on a jig may catch potential buyers, but adds nothing to the baits appeal to the fish. Fish are drawn to color of different shades and combinations based on water clarity, cloudy or sunny skies, time of day, what type and size prey they are feeding on. I like to powder coat my heads, then apply clear sparkle fingernail polish to add some flash. It has been proven time and again that color matters on not just shirting, but jig head as well. You can take that to the bank!

    Default Oops

I have several friends I do jigs for here locally. Some don't want eyes, some don't want paint at all. Me, I like the contrast and the eyes. even if its just a black dot. I really think its having something you believe in on a personal preference.

Personally I believe at times paint color can help, but for the most part I paint for looks and to keep the lead from oxidizing so even if I don't paint them I coat them with Sally's Hard as Nails or something like that. This will not hold up when fishing them, but probably will until they are used?

I keep bringing up the Gray Ghost for several reasons and here is another reason to use it. That jig had an unpainted head and V's for the tail, no tip and Gray Chenille, with a very small hook, that's it! Oh and almost forgot, no eyes either!

Even though it's not dressed to kill, kill is does anyway!
