    Default What is best?

If you go to a tackle shop most all of the the jig are made of some type of hair. It seems to me most of the pictures of the jigs on this forum are made of feathers. My question is which is best for catching fish and how does silicon skirt material compare to hair or feathers?

Imagine the silicon skirt jigs being like a plastic tube jig. But will hold up a lot longer.

As far as feathers I think a lot of that is the tiers personal preference. I prefer to tie with marabou but others will prefer hackle.

I think it’s just in what you like. I have used silicone/rubber, hackle and marabou. I have some hair but haven’t yet used it. I’m not sure if one is necessarily better then the others although some have more action in the water. Rabbit and marabou I think being tops for that.

I use marabou from BPS or Cabela's and faux fur from hobby Lobby for tail. I go to Walmart and buy 100 yard bundles of knitting yarn in various colors for $3.88 each. 10 bundles won't break the bank and will last a lifetime of tying. I also use a little tinsel for sparkle. My .02

Thanks for the replies, I have tied a few jigs using deer tail hair and squirrels tails. Have caught some on my ties but was wondering if I was missing something but not using feathers or hackle. I have some marabou but not really used it yet but will.

Deer hair and squirrel hair don't have as much movement in the water as marabou and the silicon legs in my option

Bass and saltwater? Yes. Crappie? No.

A lot depends on what you're fishing for. In saltwater, bucktail is used a lot because it's tougher and stands up to the "toothier" fish you catch. For subtle action in the water, marabou (feathers) is king, but rabbit (fur) is great, too.

It's all about what you like. I tie a variety of different things. And it also depends on what you're wanting the jig to look like as well.

After what’s already been said, all I can say is to try some of each and see what fits what you like and the way you fish. I use Maribou and kip tail (calves tail). I use silicone legs some too, all depends on who I’m chasing.

There are reasons for all of them and mostly a personal preference especially when dealing with Crappie! Like deathb4disco said fish with teeth and more aggressive and tougher fish hair will hold up much better. However feather will work well on all of them, just some fish will tear the jig up faster! I like feathers due to better action, especially Marabou. It’s also necessary to remove the hook more careful using the materials we use to tie with, never pinch with hemostats anything except the hook!

Also should say soft plastics work on all of them, but you do have to change out the soft plastic regularly!

After all we are on a Crappie site here!
