You tube (lots of how to vids) & Fly fishing stores, or friends that tye…. Some sites offer tutorials

Before the computer it was books. I highly recommend reading up on old (or new) issues of Fly Tyer magazine. They're on line too.

And before you say that you don’t have the tools to give it a try, don’t say that. There was a gent on here a few years back that spoke of getting his first vise, and he had been tying for over 30 years. He took a pair of needle nose vise grips and put them in his bench vise to hold the hooks, and used whatever materials he could find wherever and his wife’s sewing thread. Point is, it doesn’t have to be expensive of perfect to catch fish. Welcome aboard, and there are no dumb questions. I have probably already asked them.

A friend of mine taught me about 40 years ago.

Just a simple 1/32 oz hair jig. No vice, no bobbin or other tools.

Just a mold, pair of scissors and thread.

This jig isn't fancy, I now use power paint and I along with the people I Crappie fish with catch some nice fish.

    Good luck.

A friend who was a commercial trout and panfish fly tyer taught me. He was kind enough to direct me to decent but not expensive tools. Showed me how to tie a basic wooly worm and a few bucktail and marabou streamers. That was back in the mid 70's. Tying is an addiction after you catch your first fish on your creation.

Before the videos were available I learned by using lessons from FAOL and I will leave a link. It's a fly tying fishing site, but they tie materials in just like we do plus even more. Also these lessons will help with he language that most miss when learning just from the videos. You also will lear for sure the right way to tie in each piece of material.

Click on Fly Tying, then Beginning tying. It will cover the tools and just a great bunch of tying lessons. Do yourself a big favor and check these lessons out!
