Orvis starter kit and books back in the early 90's.

If there is an Orvis store near you check with them. They offer free fly tying lessons and provide the vice and materials. Our local store has these classes on Saturdays. All the techniques are the same for jig tying.

Check out SK's Crappie Fishing Adventures youtube site. He has a couple of good videos. It's what I am watching to learn how.

I learned from youtube. Skip, and SK have some excellent info, as well as many others on the net. Don't forget to check out the stickies at the beginning of the threads on here. Info on where to get materials, equipment (and you don't have to get the most expensive), as well as how-to's. Believe me, the first couple may not look very good, but most will catch fish. Like everything else in life, with some practice, patience and trial and error, they start really coming around. And just like others have said, it is addictive, very addictive. I will say this too, there is nothing like the feeling of tying a jig, or creating a lure with your own hands and then catching a fish on it. I've been tying for about 5 years now, and try to learn something new every time I sit down at the vise. Good luck with your ties should you start, and if you have any questions, just ask. There are some really great people on hear that will answer your questions.

He took a pair of needle nose vise grips and put them in his bench vise to hold the hooks, and used whatever materials he could find wherever and his wife’s sewing thread. Point is, it doesn’t have to be expensive of perfect to catch fish. Welcome aboard, and there are no dumb questions. I have probably already asked them.
I tied my first hair jig earlier this spring using these exact tools and a patch of grey beard hair that I got from trimming my beard. Looks like a grey ghost( I call mine Ole Grey Beard) and caught a lot of crappie and bluegill on it.
The older I get the more I realize the therapeutic benefits of fishing
