Default First time tying a jig.

My materials finally came in so Saturday night I sat down and tried to do a little tying. A big thanks go out to all the Crappie.com folks and especially Skip and Shipahoy for the sticky listing tools and materials, I used it to make up my list of tools and materials. I ordered my materials and most of my tools from Crazy Angler and they gave great service. I watched Skiptomylu's video's and Crappi Hippie on youtube to sort of figure out how to tie. So here are my first attempst. Hopefully they will catch crappie.Name: IMG_20180113_195117858.jpg

For your first one these are not bad at all. I would shoot for stopping the body on a jig at or near the hook point or barb. A fly many times the chenille will go all the way to the bend of a hook, but jigs seems to look better stopping short of that. Make sure your wraps ar very close, I trie to almost overlap one wrap the the previous one and this will help the thickness of the body and maybe it will also take an extra wrap to get snug against the head.

Keep learning! Make sure to check out the links I gave in the sticky post to FAOL, their lessons of flies, but still some use chenille and they tie it in like we should. They also will help your language issues on Hackle and the kinds there are and how to tie them in. It's a valuable resource!

Thanks Skip, I will take a look at the FAOL site. I see in the pictures that I did go a little further than I meant to with the body. I was trying to stop at the hook point. Is my maraboo too far back past the hook? I watched your video on cutting the v's in about 1/4" length and have been trying to figure ou where and how you use them. I will spend some time on the FAOL site tonight. Thanks.

On the Hackle V's, I use the tip and put 3 V's with it to make a tail, but your using marabou it looks like? Also know you can make a tail just using the little V's and that would be a tail much like the original Gray Ghost jig as he didn't use a tip in his jigs much of the time. However the Saltwater Neck hackle is longer and wider and the kind of Hackle I use.

With Marabou I pull the barbules off the stem and stack them until I have enough for my tail, then I pinch it about where I want to cut it to length and the cut the end you pulled off and the tie it in. Never cut the natural ends off!

Thanks Skip, I have not cut the natural ends off, but noticed some of my jigs look that way, and I was trying to figure out why. I am using Maraboo and may need to pick up some neck hackle. I will try to post some more pictures when I tie a few more jigs. Hopefully I can tie some tonight. Thanks for the tips.
