    Default Rut is on.

Watch your driving. Rut is starting and cars wacking deer running across road. Sister in law hit a buck chasing a doe yesterday at 10:30 am…when they towed her car to Sipes Body shop in Bedford, Sipes told her,,she was the 5th wreck of the day for smacking deer. She will be lucky to find parts to repair a 2021 Equinox. Friend of mine damaged his 2021 Ranger and it took 2.5 months to find parts and fix it.

Air bags never went off…it was in riders side. She is fine. I’ve hit 3 in different vehicles over past 15 yrs and air bags never went off not that I would want the bags to go off. But when you hit a 150-200 lb animal driving 50-60 mph you would think they would work.

Air bag deployment is a complicated issue. Being an ex-car parts supplier of actual air bag controllers, and learning much about them, a 200 pound "movable" object will likely never set off the airbags. The car is absorbing much of the energy (as seen by the photos), so the decel is not enough to constitute a deployable event! And actually, you really don't want one if it's not necessary. Not only does the cost to repair go way up, but if you've never been in a car when air bags have deployed, it's quite alarming! Not that the deer impact is not alarming, but without airbag deployment, you can still see, there's no "smoke/dust", nothing is in the way of your hands, and typically, the vehicle is still rather controllable.

Please remember, I speak of likely events, and I'm sure some of you have had cases where the bags did deploy. It's all about the decel/accel rate that is measured by the accelerometers, and they decide if it's a deployable event. No matter, neither event is fun, and both are very costly. The good news is, most people will walk away from events involving deer.

That bag of hot gases flying at your face is a eye opening experience. I turned my head enough to catch it on the left side of my face. Burnt the inside of my forearms because I was locked down holding the steering wheel. Insurance adjuster remarked that the steering wheel was bent. Not a fun time

Glad your Sister-In-Law is ok. Good luck with the repairs, maybe parts won’t be so hard to find.
