    Default Just Retired

At 67 I have retired. The drive to Indy and back became too much for me.
My fishing partner (my wife) is a few years younger than I and won't be retiring soon.

I have quickly found that I have too much time on my hands and the days just drag by.
I hope to soon spend time fishing the East Fork of the White River from bank here in Columbus.
I could spend a few hours doing that each day after I do laundry, trash, etc.

I've never had many hobbies but I am going to have to find some.

Just wondering if any of you have dealt with what I'm going through?

Retirement isn't as easy as we all hope for but for those who have planned it can be wonderful.

I might be writing more and hopefully about catching fish, if not I'll be reading each day about how you are all doing.
I do enjoy what you all have to say, it is my morning start.

Not yet, but I'm planning on being there after June 30th. I think I'll have plenty to do. Between hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, cooking, etc., I'll probably find some volunteer work to do. I'm looking forward to doing what I want to do for a change instead of being chained to a desk.

I should be looking at those things, the volunteer work would be best I think, I need to be around people though I am somewhat shy.

I’m the feller you want to avoid...... undertaker.

What I have seen in my years of observance is a real need to keep the mind and body involved in life. A sudden cessation of activity is not good. Now if your career was not very challenging, then you don’t need much. If you had a position that required intense interactions, well you need a little more. You must keep your mind engaged or it will learn to idle on you. There are puzzles and things to help, but a challenge is best. Find something that requires effort. As far as physical things go, stay active. Try to avoid strenuous things that will tax your joints. Bike ride only if your balance is still keen.

Fishing can fill the voids, but not all of them. You must find a new role. Volunteering seems like a good fix for those who enjoy people. Be careful that the group does ‘t exploit your willingness, as many will do exactly that. You end up walking away. Part time jobs seem a good fix for many, and to be sure a job that you can walk away from anytime you want ain’t near as bad as one you need. Maybe get a job applying layers of chocolate to cheerleaders, or fitting corks into whiskey bottles. Something interesting.

Whatever you do understand that no matter how hard you struggle, there is no escaping me. I am patient and careful. I have buried some fellers that thought they could stave off death via exertion, such as jogging and such. Truth is some live longer sitting in the shade drinking beer. Everything in moderation is the best advice ever. Soon you will learn to hide during weekends and venture out only when the peasants are at work. Do try to have fun won’t you.
Maybe they will bite this one……

I didn’t even know that was a job but now have a goal for when I retire one day!

Congrats on the retirement, enjoy it. I agree with what Micanopy said as well. Keep active and challenged. And as Richard Gene the Fishing Machine would say “go fishing when you can because it’s good fer ya!”

I retired from construction at the age of 57 while I could still stand up straight. Thought I'd better work a little to pay for my medical insurance so I got a part time job at Home Depot. Next thing I know it's ten years later and I'm working there full time. I left there two years age to be with my father(92 years old) during his last days and never went back after he passed. Now I fish at some of the local conservation areas several days a week and try to take the boat to one of the bigger lakes once a week when the weather is not too bad. Winter is the hard time of year for me. Just can't find enough to do indoors. Can't wait for all this rain to stop so I can get to the lake again. Good luck in your retirement.

Everyone needs a purpose. Find yours. You will know it when you find it.
On another note..." A sudden cessation of activity is not good", in many different matters. Truer words have never been scribed.

The organization I'll likely do a lot for is Sleep In Heavenly Peace. Look it up and see if they have a chapter near you. Good organization that helps out a lot of needy kids.

Congrats on your retirement, it is exactly what you make of it. I've been retired right at 1 year, I anticipated retirement by assembling a small woodworking shop. No matter how tired I am or how sore my joints are (getting old is not for sissies) I get out to the shop every day unless we have other plans. Soon it will be good enough weather to get the boat out so that gets priority, even if I don't catch a fish it's a good day. Time will fly by "IF" you stay busy, if not 8 hours seem like 18 hours
