I have long lined in the spring using road runner spinners with hollow tubes (2”) injected with crappie nibbles, best colors chartreuse and a also a yellow/orange and snagged a few up to 17.75” long. Not a lot, but in the spring on the flats above the causeway in 10’ to 14’ deep water as the big ones seem to like scarce stumps near creek channels. The lake is slowly coming back in my opinion as also a couple of guides are showing more slabs even occasionally. Once the water hits 50 degrees you will see me go to crankbaits. But, on the main lake, I have found really decient occassional schools of nice size crappie of 12” or more near creek channels in 20’ to 30’ or more water and those schools are scattered. When you find one, you will not find small fish in them. The schools on the main lake move a lot and are hard to locate 2 days in a row of fishing. They seem to follow the bait fish and roam along the main creek channels. Hard to fish the main lake tho due to boat traffic. I’m going to fish a lot more this year Monroe and Patoka as both are showing better crappie than in the past 5 yrs.
