    Cool Dogwood 4-6-19

After going to Dogwood for the past 32 years it pains me to say I think there is something wrong with this lake. Saturday Capn' Randy and I made a day trip to Dogwood to get that first angling venture of the year. Morning weather was cool and high 50's the water temperature was at 55 degrees, a bit cloudy but a perfectly good day to be on the lake or we thought. I guess our first indication was that our fish finder wasn't locating any fish....none. Not big thing, we fished without locators for years. We headed out to the northwest part of the lake where the water level was roughly 10-11 feet. There were plenty of boats in that area because of the small Bass tournament was going on, we wanted to give that a try, nothing. Our mind set was on Crappie, but we also were ready for those Red Ears and Blue gills.......still nothing. After the first hour in half in that area we decided to hit some of our regular gill spots....nothing. Once again, nothing on the fish finder, except an occasional passer by. (probably a bass that had lost his way).
I thought the water wasn't as clear as in years past, maybe that was a sign. We slowly watch the water temperature rise to 62 degrees. Spot after spot after spot. 10 hours on the lake produced 3 Bass, 1 Blue gill, 1 Red Ear, no Crappie.

Days like this make you wonder if you really suck as a fisherman. But I don't think this is a fluke. We have been to this lake 4 times in a the past year and we have come in on the short stick each time. It didn't use to be like this. I know there was recent discussions regarding the decline of Dogwood over the past few years, I am inclined to believe this. It is always worse when you have been waiting to get out on the lake.

I have another trip planned for Dogwood in June with our buddy from Houston. If it sucks again, we are done.

I hate seeing fisheries that I've known all my life fall into decay.
I read of people traveling away from Indiana to catch fish but that is not an option that I can frequently take.
Good luck to you in all your fishing.

It is hard to believe that such a good fishery as Dogwood could decline to such levels. Indications are that is the case. West Boggs will follow in a few years. Over harvest of breeder fish is a factor. Biologist years ago did not believe that to be the case. Times have changed. Their are many more fisherman. Todays electronics reveal more fish and habitat. Putting 7-10 people on a pontoon, some barely out of diapers and keeping everything that is caught sure doesn't help. The State needs to put a size and number limits on all pan fish and enforce the law.

I gave up on Dogwood half dozen years ago or more. Only time I will fish West Boggs will be when the gills are getting hammered and will take a dozen only. They will be gone in a couple of years. The fishing pressure on that lake just turns me off, when you have 40-50 vehicles with trailers sitting in the parking lot about every day and more on weekends. and no more room, and that doesn’t include the campers as there is many. Loogoottee has a goal of grossing a million bucks a year on the lake and campgrounds and it is what it is when you only have a 625 acre body of water and a supposedly 35 mph speed limit and no one to even enforce that. You take 625 acres and maybe only 500 is even fishable and it a cluster fubar with the amount of boats on it and this Saturday is a USA bass tourney on it with 25 more boats. Enjoy!!!! Count me out even tho I did buy a season pass to park and launch. It will be the last one I buy.

Only had fourteen boats out when I was there. Lot was full the past weekend. C.O.s were out over the weekend too. Bait shop down the road is now open under a new owner. Plans to be open daily but was not when I went past on Monday but was Tuesday.
I got a pass too because I am ten minutes away plus we do our walks there as well.
