Default just bought a jon boat

I just bought me a jon boat 12' er and was wondering about regestration for this boat. there is no title to it, I made a trade with a friend of mine. It does have a trolling motor. Could someone please give me information on what I need to do to get my little boat legal and on the water before the fall feed of crappie passes me by. I fish all over but there is one lake that was really good to me last year when my buddy had his boat and i havent been on the water for about 4 or 5 months and shoreline fishing has totally sucked for the most part this year.

You will have to go to the DMV and register for a title. And then register the boat and trailer, and get your stickers. Depending on where you fish, you will also need to get a DNR sticker for DNR properties. If you are going to have to wait on a title, I would give up on getting out on the water this fall.

I would call the BMV and explain what you have done and they should tell you the best way to approach it. You should be able to get some temporary paperwork that allows you to use the craft until your permanent documents and stickers get to you. I do have one question........does the boat have registration numbers on it? If so this will help in the process. As far as any special tags, that is only necessary at "state parks". Chain-o Lakes, Salamonie, Mississinewa.....that tag would be required........it is no longer needed at Huntington or required at Tri-County.

Is your friend the original owner of the boat. If not does he know who the original owner and title holder was that would help allot. If not it is a long drawn out waiting process to get a title, not sure if they will issue a temp title to you since you cannot prove ownership.

Best bet is call and talk to someone at DMV, but they may have the required process on there website.

Depends on the age of the boat (and if it has an HIN). Non-motorized boats don't require registering. You can always get an affadavit from the BMV, have a police inspection done, and get a title (adding an HIN to the hull....this requires a 2nd inspection by the PD), and the BMV requires a photo.

Many waters require a launch permit, $5 non-motorized, and $20 if you have a motor.....and FYI, an electric trolling motor IS considered a "motor". You'll need to start with a Bill of Sale from your friend though to take to the BMV.

ETA: Be sure and check-out tinboats.net

Most waters do not require a launch permit.

All the DNR managed properties require the sticker. Just about everywhere down here in the southern part of the state requires one, unless your fishing rivers or creeks. And they check for them all the time.

My post should have read "Northern Waters".......I apologize. And hardly any of them require it.

I understand "most" is a relative term,, and if you counted all the private ponds & lakes, you'd be right by a landslide (and not saying you aren't correct). If/when giving advice on things like this., I generally suggest the OP get their facts (of the law/regs) from the source (DNR/State in this instance), as opposed to just taking advice from people on the internet (myself included).
