ComEd question
Does anyone know if ComEd offers surge protectors at the meter? Can't seem to get a good answer from them. I just lost $4000 worth of electronic stuff.

Do you know what caused the surge? I am a lineman and in most cases either the utility is at fault and liable for damages or your homeowners policy would cover random acts of God. IE lightening, tree issues etc. ComEd has lightening protection on all of their OH Highvoltage lines and equiptment but rarily installs anything on the secondary side. Hope that helps.

We had an ice storm. My neighborhood had 3 transformers blow all at once. My insurance would only cover it if the house also had damage but it did not.
I had been told that some electric companies have the option for homeowners to buy protection at the meter but I was not familiar with ComEd.

Make sure your insurance documents that you contacted them on this issue. I see many people have continued issues as time passes and without record of you calling they are not helpful in the future either. Document everything. As for your neighbors transformer, most often the transformer is protected with a fuse and that is what you hear "blow" Often not the cause of the issue but the effect. I would ask other neighbors if they had similiar issues with electronics, appliances, etc. If they did, it may be time to contact ComEd. Best of luck.
