    Default Jig size difference

Ok guys... typically our Illinois crappie are smaller than the crappie of further south. With that in mind, do you use smaller jigs than the typical southern fishermen? I really don't think that I do but should I? Just a though born from boredom.

I use both, somedays, they want smaller. A 1/32oz jig or lighter, can make the difference.

Agreed. Especially in colder water I go smaller.

I fish a 1/32 oz about 95% of the time. I like the slow fall.

What about lure size as in length or girth. For example do northern crappie do better with 1.5 " where southern crappie prefer 2.25". I know this sounds silly but it's cold out and I'm bored

Don't personally think a blanket statement can cover these questions. I was throwing a 1/4 oz. lipless crankbait (a One-Knocker, so about 2" long with 2 trebles) a couple of days ago in my pond for lm bass and an 11" crappie just about pulled the rod out of my hand. There was ice on the pond a week earlier, so water was under 40 degrees!

Depends more on what their feeding on . Here in the south mostly Shad , big ones . Even short Crappie hit big baits here . Here is a tube jig on a 1/8 oz jig head with #1 hook by a Sunfish I pulled from a Crappie stomach. We use even bigger tubes on 1/4 oz with 1/0 hook and still catch a few Crappie under 6'' on them .

It seems that the answer is that nobody purposely down sizes based on geographic location

Richard Gene always uses very light jigs and light line and appears to do quite well, but he is in crappie heaven there in N. Alabama.

Actually he is where I got the idea from. If he can catch larger crappie on smaller baits then can we catch MORE smaller crappie by downsizing. Like I said earlier this is just winter boredom mind games.
