    Default Rend Lake: May

Hello everyone, my buddy and I are taking our first trip to Rend Lake May 13-17. If anyone has tips for that time of year or areas of the lake for us to start it would be greatly appreciated. We are aware that the buck brush is usually still going that time of year but considering how much there is on the lake, a starting point would be helpful. Anything will help first-timers like us! Thank you!

Just my opinion. Buttonbush all over the lake; They're not everywhere, but everywhere they're somewhere.

If, as you state, this is your first trip, you definitely should go with a guide like Nick Schafer or his uncle Bill.
If you can't get one at this late date, you may want to launch out of "Sailboat" harbor and fish either side of
Route 154 depending on the direction of the wind as well as the two bridges you can access from "Sailboat"
harbor. Just be careful, some of those fishermen are somewhat "territorial". Try finding 15 FOW and setting
an orange or pink 3/16oz jighead at 11-12 feet. You can use minnows or ty some Lakefork plastic baits.
Best of luck and welcome to a great site for crappie fishermen.

Thank you! We are going on a guided trip our first full day. We are going with Jason Johns and Boneyard Fishing. Hopefully we can learn enough that day to help the following couple days. We'll try the bridges for sure!

He will definitely get you on some fish and point you in the right direction for your remaining days there. Just for reference you will be fishing in the buckbrush using jigs or minnows in 1 to 4 foot of water. Good luck and tight lines.

Have fun and post updates. I haven't been there, yet. It's one of the lakes on my bucket list.
