    Default Fishing buddies

I am a disabled sportsman who is looking for fishing/hunting buddies. I am wanting to learn more about crappie fishing especially spider rigging and pulling cranks. I just got a used open floor plan John boat that I want to set up for mostly a fishing boat but also a duck hunting boat.

You are off to a good start. Crappie.com is packed full of great information. Try to attend the IL. gatherings. Watch this forum. We usually have a spring, summer, and fall event. Plus there are local crappie clubs to join, meet new people who love to talk fishing, and go fishing. Where about are you in IL?

First rule of crappie fishing, is spider rigging is NOT fishing. Driving around in circles dragging 16 minnows at a time isn't crappie fishing. Hellen Keller could catch em spider rigging.

There are many ways to crappie fish, single pole ,pulling crankbaits, and yes even spider rigging. One way is no better than the other and work better at different times of the year.

Congratulations you're number one, but we know you won't be the last person to try and justify driving in circles dragging 16 minnows at a time, while never actually picking a location to drop a jig, or pitch a cork, or throw a lure. You realize you never actually catch a fish while Hellen Keller rigging. The fish catches itself, you never get to feel the fish actually hit the bait. So, if you and a buddy are out driving in circles and a 4 pound crappie grabs one of your 16 minnows, who claims the fish? Neither of you actually caught it. What's the ruling? And, when people say "wow, a 4 pound crappie I bet that felt awesome when it hit you bait" you get to say. "Well, actually I was just driving in circles, I never actually felt it, or did anything for that matter". And you can be reminded of that each time you look at the picture. There's the 4 pounder that caught itself. Hats off to ya!!! Hellen Keller rigging has done to crappie fishing, what motorized decoys have done to waterfowl hunting. End of story

I can see you dont know anything about spider rigging, let me enlighten you on it. First it just isn't randomly going in circles, you have to find the fish, the depth, the speed you need to be going. Most of the time I am fishing over and in more brush than a single pole. Crappie dont always catch themselves you have to be more aware and paying attention as many times you have to set the hook or they are gone. You will never experience 2 crappie on at once, great fight. When I catch that 4 lb crappie,I wont be looking at a picture of it, it will be on the wall with my 3.3lb that I caught spider rigging and I will be just as proud of it too.Name: 20140811_195118.jpg

You mean the 3.3 that caught itself. I've seen countless "fishermen" doing it, and even had a buddy take me out once to try and convince me. We sat there dragging minnows doing nothing. Hellen Keller rigging is all about numbers, and has nothing to do with the thrill of the hunt, or feeling that thump. Like I said it's done the same thing to crappie fishing that motorized decoys have done to waterfowl hunting. It's made "fisherman" out of people that would struggle if that had to actually fish for em. I'm happy you, and so many other guys enjoy sitting in a boat trolling around, but I'd rather educate myself, find the fish, find the pattern, and experience that thump when one takes a swing at my jig. There's nothing like that feeling when it comes to crappie fishing, and no one that drags minnows around all day long will experience that feeling. And, good for you that you've got a 3 plus on the wall, but ..... But, that's just me.

if it legal and you enjoy it go for it.I do like bass tour. rules versus crappie tour. rules ,one rod artificial lure and turn all loose at end.
