Default Rend Lake - Off Topic

    Hi all,

I know this is totally off topic, but I'm hoping to get some local responses in this forum as opposed to the catfish section.

Each year I see numerous pictures of decent flathead catfish being brought out of Rend Lake. I've never been able to get into them, though.

I can catch my fill of channels, but the flatheads elude me no matter what I try.

I'm not looking for anyone to give up their secret spot or anything, but would anyone be willing to let me know a general area of the lake that should be promising for them?

    Thanks!

We catch flatheads all over the lake. You can't fish for them like you do channels. Flat heads are predatory fish that prefer live bait. They can be very difficult to catch on rod and reel but it can be done, keep after em and good luck!

Thanks, Mean Green. I was hoping you'd reply since I think I've seen more than one flattie in your pics you've posted.

Weather permitting, I'm headed up there tomorrow to see if I can locate one. I found a promising looking spot last time I was out. I knew flatheads preferred live bait. My plans are to try and feed one a live bluegill.

Go around the riprap and catch some Green Sunfish. They prefer them to Bluegill. While Bluecats and Channels can be caught in open waters and relatively clean bottoms at times....Flatheads will generally always be around rocks or wood. They are more of an ambush fish then the other cats. Once you figure out their favorite haunts then you can depend on them to be there year after year generally speaking.
