You'll catch a great number of them, and most of the year with exceptions at times you will have to weed through many 6-8 inch fish before you get a goodun but there is some dandies in there.
Finally got my watercraft #'s so I can get a lake permit for mattoon. Anyone have any tips/advice for how the lake fishes for crappie? Haven't been there since the early 70's.
Thanks

Last week I was catching some nice ones on the north side of the levee road tight lining minnows in 13 feet of water and also casting jigs to the bank and dragging the jig back at about 10 feet deep. The closer to the marina I got the bigger the fish got for some reason. Like Birdie said, you will catch lots of smaller fish but it's all fun.
I like lake Mattoon , but wonder how the lake is with all the carp that died off this year . Are they gone or still rotting along the bank.I like to fish many species of fish and Mattoon has a variety of them. Usually a good lake to fish. Haven't been for several weeks if anyone has had a recent trip i would be interested in how the trip went. Thanks.
