    Default Another Lowrance question

I finally ordered my Lowrance HDS 8 with SS today. I want to buy a RAM mount for it and don't know which one to get? trying to order asap to any advice would be great! FYI - it's being mounted on the console.

I'm also looking at picking up one of the new elite 5's with down scan (for the front). Would you suggest a mount for it?

I would definitely go with the 1.5 or 2 inch ball mount. I had a LC X – 38 (8 inches) on the bow mounted with a 1 inch ball and it routinely flopped down when I ran across the lake. Have upgraded to a 1.5 inch ball and it seems to be holding fine.

What is the actual part number I should be ordering for the 2.5" ball, and all the things required to make it work?

The RAM-D-111U includes a mounting ball, the double socket arm and the rectangular mounting plate for the HDS 8/10 (although the holes on the gimble and the mounting plate will not line up). The double socket arm comes in three different arm lengths. The "C" length arm (part no. RAM-D-201U-C) is 3.12 inches long from center to center of the ball sockets. The standard length arm is 6.56 inches long, and the "E" length or long arm is 11.12 inches socket to socket. As an assembly each can be ordered with the respective part numbers. RAM-D-111U-C for short. RAM-D-111U-C for standard length and RAM-D-111U-E for the long arm. For pictures visit "themountdepot.com" and type the above part numbers into the search box.

You should measure the location you plan to mount your locator and figure out which arm length works the best. The longer the arm, the less effective the mount. I would plan on laying the arm back against a solid surface if you have that option, it will help stabilize the mount and minimize vibration of the locator while you are running. Some expect more of mounts than others, but to me RAM systems are marginal at best for the larger locators even with the 2.25 Dia "D" size balls. It will obviously hold an 8 better than a 10. Keep the mount tight and mount the locator tilted slightly rearward and back if possible. In this position the unit will not fall forward onto the glass screen when the mount gives up on the road or in waves. They are the only way to go in tight places though.

How do you guys feel about using the mouth that comes with it ,instead of a RAM? Any draw backs?

The gimbal bracket that comes with the unit attaches to the 111U adapter plate in the RAM system, or you can mount the gimbal bracket directly to your boat if you have the proper space. Either will work. With the gimbal mounted directly you lose rotation ability, but still have tilt. I have also been working with Bert Custom mounts for about 2 years. They are very strong and stable but require a flat mounting surface. These mounts are made for the Great Lakes and many walleye pros use them for the larger Humminbird and Lowrance units. The electronics mounts come in 3.5, 6, 10 and 12" heights plus custom sizes. Google Bert’s Custom Tackle.
