    Default Success!!

Caught my first crappie EVER through the ice yesterday!!

In fact, I iced 8 of them, all 11-12" along with 4 nice perch, 9"+. I've been out a few times, caught some small perch and bluegill, even a bass. I fished with a group of guys who were using tip-ups; I was the only guy jigging. They worked the water from around 10' out to perhaps 25. My reading indicated that I should be looking for deep water basins and that's where I found them in 30' of water. My electronics showed fish near the bottom when I drilled the holes in this deeper water and all my fish came from the 2 deepest holes.

One of the other guys, (I think it's his first season ice fishing as well) came out to see how I was doing. He has never seen electronics being used on the ice before and was blown away with the ability to see your jig and see the fish show up and approach and bite. Now he wants to take the finder off his boat and use it on the ice! He went back and got his jigging rod so I gave him my hole and graph and let him try and within just a few minutes he landed a nice perch of about 11". He then went back and got a couple of tip ups and set them around us and had a quick flag and landed another nice perch!

Yesterday was the most productive day I've ever had, even going way back to when I used to ice fish as a young kid. Never landed that many fish in one day fishing with any type of equipment. I can't wait to get out again on a different lake with that I know holds lots of good fish.

What state are ice fishing in? Here in Northeast Ohio guys have been doing really well on crappies through the ice. A lot of guys were putting double digit numbers on the ice over this past weekend.

I wouldn't associate Connecticut with ice fishing for crappie. If someone asked me to go to Connecticut to fish, I would think we were going trout fishing. Congrats on putting some on ice.

If you're talking trout in CT, 95% of them will be stocked by the state. Very few bodies of water have a natural trout population. Pike have become a very popular winter fish here, especially on the bigger bodies of water in the northern half of the state. Yellow perch and bluegill are the mainstay's, with some large and smallmouth action sprinkled in. Walleye are also stocked in a growing number of places.

I hope I get a few more chances at them. We're in a stretch of very warm weather here and it's going to wreak havoc with the ice. Not sure how much we'll have once this storm blows through on Thursday; it was 60 here today.

I hope you get the chance to get back after them. We too are experiencing a warm up. The temperature is supposed to drop down on Friday. I hope it gets back down to firm the ice up. Good luck on your next trip.
