    Default First Mallards!

    Hi Friends,

Last year I started getting into waterfowl hunting. This morning, I bagged my first mallards! One drake and a hen at first light. They came right into the decoys, it was awesome.

Driving dads old Silverado we call Big Red. It’s been in the family since new (1996) and now has 338k original miles on the stock engine. Dad was never into duck hunting because he didn’t like the taste, but we would go hunting for dove in this truck all through my teenage years. It was a little different hunting by myself, but I’m blessed to get to use Big Red just like dad and I did years ago..Hunting God’s country.

This was also my first time shooting (besides yesterday lol) since I had open heart surgery last June. I was a little worried about the high brass, so I got a Limbsaver recoil pad for the trusty 870. I am pleased with its performance and am blessed to say it didn’t hurt! Praise God for a fun, safe morning, where the Lord delivered 2 mallards into my hand.

    Y’all hunt safe.

    Best,
    Slab Apprentice

Awesome. Years ago I found a duck recipe that used black cherry. That and not over cooking them helped make them tasty.

Pick whole, split in half, pressure cook until meat is about ready to fall off the bone, salt & pepper, flour and fry. Your Dad will LOVE 'em. Wood ducks are the BEST! Congrats on your mallards. You should have them mounted.

KABOOM x 2 ,congratulations sir , used to chase a few ducks , like the breasts removed from the bone and soaked in light brine , then pounded and then soaked in light brine and then pounded and then soaked in light brine and pounded....takes days of rinsing and pounding, but once they get just about all white they are pretty tasty chicken fried
Flight ducks only , never ate none of the others

That sounds pretty good. I’m gonna try that! Thanks Ketchn.

    Congratulations on the successful trip.
    Wood duck is my favorite!
Pluck and then smoke, use a thermometer and don’t over cook them.
