shot a big sow one time with a 30 30 at about 20 yards or less , right under the left eye and it came out right behind her right ear , that piggy hit the ground and bounced up and was coming at me so fast I bought messed myself ,she dodged me at point blank for some reason and I tried to get a second shot off as she ran by me but it was to no avail , she came to rest nearly a hundred yards behind me .
not much out there can handle a centerfire cartridge at that range right in the face and go that fast and with their compass still intact .

the dog growling thing is what scares me the most , they aint playing when they get to doing that big dog growl thing , sounds kinda like a bear crossed to a dog sort of noise/sort of semi roaring and will stand the hair right up on the back of your neck for sure.
had a sow do it to me when I was unarmed at about 30 yards one day over her little piggies under my feet in the tall grass, made me go up a leaning mesquite tree like a fox squirrel

Life would have been easier if I could have used a centerfire but I was forced to become a marksman with the centerfire. It's been five years since I have shot at a hog and I really miss it.
one of my buds used a 223 for a while , they drop or they leave with a small bullet , he lost more than he ketched most of the time, one fella I guided on a hog hunt wanted to use his 223 ar , he sent 16 rounds out of it and ear shot the first one and it left like it was on fire , the only one that went down was a 15 lb piggy he shot mid body as they tried to leave the scene of the crime . He said it was the most fun he ever had on a hunt ,btw ....
rimfire on piggies is prolly pretty serious fun as long as you aint on ground level with em ....

The ones caught by the dogs usually get a 22 bullet from a pistol to end the fight

Went to a high fence hog hunt down in OK with some guys from work. It was more a of a social event than a hunting event, but fun.

In the intro briefing the owner said that these hogs were mean, and will charge you. When they charge, the key is to wait until they lower their heads, and then just step to one side. They will run right past you. Yawn, Yea, Yea, I’m no tourist. This isn’t my first rodeo…

No Spit there I was…. I saw this pig running by at about 50 yards. It was early in the hunt, so I didn’t want to shoot him. He saw me, and did a hard left and came right at me. No he isn’t charging me! I raise my Marlin 30-30, aim for his head, squeezed the trigger, and got a very loud “CLICK”. OH Spit! What did that guy say again??? The pig lowered his head, I stepped aside, and he ran right by me. That was COOL! My newish 30-30 had pick an inopportune time to misfire, I have since had it fixed.

My preferred aim point is the head. Draw a line between the eyes and ears, pass the bullet through that point. Never had one that do anything, but twitch when my aim was correct. If I can’t get the head shot, I aim for the center of the neck when I have a high power rifle (30-06, 243, etc.). All of them go stiff legged, and fall over.

Ya’ll aren’t going to believe this one. I was hunting pigs down in very south TX, we could see Mexican flags flying from the stands. They wanted head shots to minimize tracking. OK, I can do that. I had my favorite 30-06 that I’ve had for many decades and shoot pretty well. I had a pretty good streak of head shots out to about 250 yards. When this pig laid down in a wallow at 75 yards. I was a little too over confident, and pulled the shot low into the dirt. At this ranch, they had a taxidermy deer rear end with the tail up. If you miss, you have to kiss that deer as they take your picture to post on the board. I didn’t want my mug posted to that board. As the pig ran away I worked the bolt and fired a shot hitting the pig in the chest. He never slowed down, and i remembered they wanted head shots. I worked the bolt again, aimed at his nose, fired, and he went down in a cloud of dust. I was kind of proud of that bit of shooting. I was disappointed when they made me kiss that deer butt, because I missed the first shot.

if you can hit one twice on the run you should be proud , we about never get a second shot chance here much less a third and to hit them running is something that have only done once or twice and it typically wasnt where I wanted to hit them ....
