    Default Sandhill Crane call

Years ago I bought a Sandhill Crane call. It was suppose to be the "secret" turkey locater call. I never once got a turkey to shock gobble using it. But....I have been using it the last few years to call sandhill cranes. Kinda fun to get them answering and circling above you. I had a small flock circle my house a few times this morning after I started calling to them. I must be on their migration route because every year about this time I have fun getting those birds to answer and circle. I've still never heard them make a turkey gobble though.

Crow calls or owl hooter calls can get them turkeys a gobblin. Bet it’s neat to see the cranes respond.

it is neat. Especially when they are really high and start spiraling down to investigate the calling. I think the reason it was tried was to make it harder for other hunters to identify where you were, and to give the toms something different to respond to.

I have heard those old toms shock gobble to a truck door closing. Had a neighbor years ago that caught a full grown wild tom. Things showed up at the bus stop and started chasing the kids. After a couple of days of that he was captured and put into a pen at the neighbors house. I would sit by the window in the back room closest too the pen and strike up a Lynch's foolproof box call. That tom would lose his mind.

I have heard that also. They land in the fields here by the thousands on their migrations. Watched a video where they were hunting them and cooked some. Red meat just like beef

A member of my RC Flying club’s daughter went out to a park very recently in Nebraska for the annual mating ritual. She had a video that was interesting to watch.

Bob, did it resemble a high school dance? I've heard of them referred to ad "ribeye in the sky". Not legal to hunt here except for crop damage permits.

Round here we get a bunch of these birds. Some stay year round, but most have moved back North already. Yesterday a pair was in the middle of the highway. Blowing the horn didn’t speed them along their way at all. Good fun to watch what happens when some dumb human gets too close to their baby. If our wardens caught you shooting any of them, there would be a detour on the way to the jail. Some place quiet and secluded where they could pound the pulp out of you.
Maybe they will bite this one……
