Sometimes, but not all dogs. I have seen several that could not find double lunged deer that went 50 yds. But most can find a fatally shot deer. that doesn't travel very far Learning to read the dog and being a team is about as important as the dogs ability to track when going on the longer tracks. It takes a good bit of trust in the dog (and knowing how the dog is acting) to follow them 5-600 yds without a single drop of blood to be found. We are still learning every track.

to be sure just like humans my friend there is one of them dogs without sense in every crowd ......and to be sure trusting that nose a dog has can sometimes be a challenge .
one or 2 dogs I have followed over the years got pulled off the track because either myself or its owner was sure it had lost the track .
one went the exact opposite way when we let it out of the truck and that fellow insisted his dog would find my deer .
of course I was muttering to myself about what a ding dong dog it was as we went to where the deer was originally shot the opposite way .
about the time we got to where I shot it , the dog let out a "strike" bark 300 yards away the opposite direction ? I asked the ole boy what is he barking about way over there and he simply said "he found your deer " , sure enough the buck had run a huge circle and there it lay when we got there ,,,,
on a side note : the dog never took the "track" he went straight to the deer right out of the truck without following its actual trail , i suppose being a gut shot deer it smelled it from afar , them there doggy noses are something to admire for sure .

We lost one this year (all that I know of so far) and it was my fault. The dog went that way twice and a didn't follow. I didn't think the deer went that way and I was pushed for time so we didn't push forward. They found the deer the next day about 200 yds further in the route she was going.

I had that happen to me once. Shot a nice one with my bow, saw him run off from left to right, but couldn't find any blood. My buddy had a lab, so I called him. When he got there and turned the dog loose, the dog immediately ran LEFt, over the ridge. I was like, "Boy, that's a stupid dog, because I know for sure the deer ran RIGHT. My buddy was like, "She's rarely wrong. Let's check it out." Sure enough, just over the ridge, at the bottom next to the creek we found my deer. He had made a circle behind me, and piled up at the creek. Moral of the story: Always trust the canine. He/she knows more that me.
