It is amazing what those noses smell

Outlaw can't believe you made the rookie buck fever mistake of immediately going after your deer! veteran like yourself should have done the 30 min plus wait. Had a shot on a trailing buck this year where there was just one opening as I saw him moving along left to right in heavy brush and had my scope up and as soon as saw brown fired, saw him buck up and jump and then disappeared into rough stuff but heard one big crash and then nothing. waited an hour as I had a great spot up on coal spoil and wanting to see if a doe would come by. After an hour went to spot, not one drop o blood but confident of my shot placement. Went across creek and up and looked and around 40 yards there he was stone dead. same as you shot thru and hit his opposite shoulder and destroyed it but bullet didn't exit so why no blood trail. learned also years ago to ALWAYS have at least one rifle when going trailing as you will find a still live deer even overnight and need to finish it. congrats tho on the family hunt and they got to hear the shot and knew you were after that big 10! looks like you got the boss deer of the neighborhood for sure.

Would have paid good money to see that swamp buck ending with the dog on one end and you grabbing the antler wiht a knife in hand. Just like you to take a knife to a gun fight! Marty wuold sure make a song out of that encounter!

BTW heard him tell a story about writing that song. He flew into NJ airport and on the ride into NY city this song came to him and he was so excited HE couldn't wait to hear how it ended.

rifle shot deer require I always follow up quickly is how I was trained , arrow deer I wait .
but my quickly ain't near as "quickly" as it used to be .....
one thing for certain , most "dead" deer get found in the end .
the Arkansas buck was followed a bit in the first 20 minutes
when i found what appeared to be parts of not vitals I let him rest
and then the dog about an hour or more later .
he wasn't near dead when we found him for sure .

we had several "deer" injured folks in that camp over the years .
one got his shirt and chest split down the middle by hooves .
the other almost lost a finger on a not dead buck he stuck his knife into.
that deer lost its not so dead mind and his knife almost took off his pointer finger in the ensuing battle .
it looked dead when he went to field dress it ....
of course it was always a bit of a trainwreck over there .
my one bud lost the tip of one finger and a bit off another on a climbing stand that pinched him GOOD while riding a 4 wheeler in the swamp .

Dangerous activities for sure

My wife’s uncle pulled into hunting camp one evening with his “dead” deer standing up in the back of his truck.
